#Manifesto

Manifesto is kind like announcement to public. In this project, we need to use art way to show people what we believe and exhibit our work stuff.

The first thought comes into my mind is from Netflix show named mind hunter. A man in prison said that prison is a frame of thought. We are all our own prisons, We are each our own Wardens, we do our own time. Prison is in your mind.

Figure1. My manifesto poster

http://youtu.be/4fmPVcgpHeM short video in my presentation

Actually this man is Charles Milles Manson. Until now, i still can’t imagine that i was inspired by a really bad man in the world but it’s true. Let’s ignore what he have done so far for a minute, focusing on these words what are perfectly express my thought and feeling in side. What i also believe is that there’s no one was born in bad way but effected by their surrounding. There’s no one awful from head to toes.

Figure2. Lorena (My presention)

From my perspective, it is horrible if i don’t have my own thought but following trends or be a different person based on others expectation. Possibly, sometimes we all can’t help changing or doing what we want to without following the order. However we all should have correct conception and self-awareness. ‘Prison is in your mind’ – having free thinking way and identify ability no matter who told you so. It is said that do not be the giant of thoughts, the dwarf of actions. Whereas, i think that you couldn’t go anywhere if you don’t have a opening mind.
I want people could influence each other but could not change them totally. I don’t want change the world and i don’t think i have that ability but at least i don’t want the world change me. In addition, people can lead someone else but ask or force them to do something.

Moreover, i made my poster in this way because manifesto is published as a official way in the past years while social media changed our communicate way and we almost post our thoughts every day online without conscious nowadays. So that why i want to male a connection between them.

Feedback

Figure3. Zhengxi

It is too difficult to draw like a kid when you have professional painting skill. In addition, the rad tape on the corner is really art but randomly display.

Figure4. Joko exhibition

During presentation today, i quite like joko’s presenting way and her belief that gender is over. It means that there is no different between male and female.

Figure5. Julia

This disign is interactive exhibition. We could play with these pazzles and read the sentence on them which is really interesting.

Figure6. Selin

Selin’s design seems quite simple but there is really deep meaning behind this paper. This is a reality exsit phenomenon. people are crazy about buying stuff who are actually empty inside without emotional satisfaction.

Back to undergraduate, I’ve chosen to study interior design and roughly knowing a part of these architect products. I used CAD to drawing the plan of some of them and want to learn how they designed these architecture. Because i believed that imitationing is a good method to learn the real thing.

Brand you Challenge

Figure1. aim of project

This aim of project is about what kind of brands do i used in my life and influenced me. Then, analysing a brand in details by choosing one brand involing list.

Figure2. list of brands

I made a list of brands on clothes, shoes, entertainments and cosmetics. In the meanwhile, i was realised that there are so many brand what i’ve used in my life but i never think about why i brought them rather than other brands. I reviewed the moment when i brought them and where did i heard about these brand from.

Some of these brand are knowing from my friends because they wear these, it is obvious that advertising is a real powerful method to support brands especially from someone who you know well.

Figure3. analysing

The company’s primary business is its subscription-based streaming service which offers online streaming of a library of films and television programs, including those produced in-house. It is a really creative brand which made their own films and books available in library.

Workshop_screen printing

According to Customplanet(2019), screen printing is the process of transferring a stencilled design onto a flat surface using a mesh screen, ink and a squeegee.

Fabric and paper are the most commonly screen-printed surfaces, but with specialised inks it’s also possible to print onto wood, metal, plastic, and even glass. The basic method involves creating a stencil on a fine mesh screen, and then pushing ink (or paint, in the case of artwork and posters) through to create an imprint of your design on the surface beneath.

Brief#3Archive–playboy

I was so familiar with this photograph back to the young age. At that moment, i realized that this photo was from playboy as their first published magazine on 1953.

Then i did some research online and found that their sales at the peak around 1970 arrived 5. 6 million Monthly but now not even close to half million.

I was so excited and thought that definitely is what i want to work on.

As we all know, America had several times technology revolution after second world war. But it’s not quite a right time. So, it result in recession with rising prices and over tens of millions people loose jobs. This is main reason why the sales rising.

According to Hollywood films, directors prefer to employ mature woman with angular face especially Italian woman rather than sweet looking woman such as Marilyn Monroe during that period.

From this cover, we can see that this woman is powerful. Because she wear suits and hold a cigar although she is naked. But, do u aware that these characters are all like man. I was conscious that actually these women are looking from men’s angle.

I collected almost all of covers from 1953 until last year. They use woman features to attract audience like lips, feet, boobs and actions. But it differ from porn books. It’s involved news, fashion and also interview report from different fields. In addition, old media like magazine and newspaper were effect by new advance technology media since 1980s. The CEO of playboy company claimed that people could look for naked photos even videos online by a click.

At the meanwhile, wide cross-section of society showed that these covers engage young generation treat women as entertainments or appendants based on their hobbies. Public opinions lead playboy company forbid using nude woman photos as covers for a year although reused on next year. Their theory had been waver at least. Furthermore, they changed subheading from entertainment for man to entertainment for all on 2018.

This brand has over 60 years history, but it still needs to change due to the world and society keep changing.

By the way, archive workshop does helped a lot. A bunch of paperwork and books in front of me when I get archive folders. It is difficult to decide where should i start with if I didn’t take that workshop.

Archive_processing

Based on the brief three, i went to many Archives in UK such as UAL, UCA and British Library Archive. I am not only learning the rules inside of it and how it work, but also inspired by these places and collections. Countless treasure products from hundred years ago, it is really a inaccessibly chance to get close with pioneer works even touch them.

Fig.1 Letterpress machines.(1962)
Fig.2 letter words(1972)
Fig.3 Alphabet design book cover(1960)

I found the development of printing technology by John Westwood and the typography of advertising around 1960s at UAL. These works all related with graphic design and alphabet design. With the developing of printing machines, various color could be used on printing books and magazines. In addition, the layout and alphabet design are more valued for the cover page.

Fig.4 playboy cover(1953)

However, the collection makes me interested that is Playboy magazine covers from 1953 till now. There are several things get my attention: definitively first one is the women on the cover pages. All of them are hot and sexy without cloth but not too over. Next, the publish date changed with marketing and sales. The last one is influencing from advanced social media.

Fig.5 without subheading (2017)

Playboy enterprise was built in 1953 which involve magazines, clothing, movies and entertainment etc. The position of playboy magazine in the market is entertainment for man as the subheading on the cover page. After some continual arguments from different field in society, the subheading removed from cover in 2017 and changed to ‘entertainment for all’ in 2018.

Fig.6 changed subheading (2018)

On the other hand, the developing internet technology seriously effect the marketing sales of paper media. Consumer could look for naked photos online by click bottom rather than buy magazines monthly. According to  BBC News (2017), the sales of Playboy magazines got the peak in 1970s and arrived 5,600,000 books monthly but not even close to 700,000 in 2017. At present, the company rely on subordinate beverages and jewelry to earn profits.

Friday multi-challenges

#Team tower

Build a tower_build a team

—— Tom Wujec (TED TALK)
Fig.01 Tower from Julia group

Unfortunately, we lost this challenge and the most embarrassing thing is that I’ve studied architecture more than 5years. This might be the key reason why we lost.

We made a plan even draft sketching. Similarly, we consumed a plenty of times cause it. Unlikely, the others made the tower straight away and negotiate at same time.

In adults society, majority people want to be in charge in community. Sometimes, it is easily forget the aim in the project and processing. In addition, the thinking way of adults are more complicated and overthinking. However, children are slightly influenced by this factors. They are always thinking straight away to get results.

#The Egg Event

Video.01 Egg event

“How many distances can we catch the egg?” _ Question

I’ve thinking that the reason why we were throwing the egg and catch it. Firstly, it is obvious that the relationship between people means team work. The action of throwing and catching, i think that it’s like a conversation between them. The success could count on one person which need communication and negotiation.

Moreover, from this action, ‘throwing’ person should concentrate on another person by using acceptable method to throw egg. On the other hand, the ‘catching’ person should get ready before throwing by using two hands to hold egg to protect it.

Fig.02 Explanation from Brian

Brian brought up some deeply meaning more than appearance. It is kind like the same way when we do research. People could only guess before they get the ‘information’. Then they could feel something when catch it. Finally, they could see more clearly when it explore.

#Question challenge

I think that asking questions need a appropriate technique if we want to get some helpful information. Sometimes, it will be strange if people ask something directly without making the stories. There’s two results we would get if we use this way. First one is fake information, people will answer what would makes u feel good or what u are looking for. Last one is that u will get nothing cause people feel weird and vigilant.

Challenge2#

This aim is creating a ‘loose’ timeline of those who have impacted (society) and the world in which we live.

Fig.1 Timeline
Fig.2 Timeline
Fig.3 Timeline

Making timeline is a best way to help doing self-reflection of historic information and make it more clear to understand. In addition, creating a timeline with my own influencers like directors, musicians, artists, writers, enterprisers and even presidents.

It is always difficult to make things start at the beginning. However, everything went well when someone nominated a name of influncer. Moreover, I discover that the history processing in the past years in the whole world. At the specific time, what happened from different countries, which shakers make influence at that time in what kind of field.

It is more like a film to me with different timeline around the world showing in front of my face. In addition, the most familiar part for us is the time after 19century due to we all born after that time and got deeply influence by the innovator and influencer at that time.

This lesson makes me realize that the aim of this class is providing a opportunity and method to observe the changing in the whole world in diversity period during this timeline.

Focal point of society keeps changing by years. In the past decades, the majority group of influencers are from cultural pioneers such as Fraud.

Whereas, most of influencers are celebrities or actors today. It tends towards type of entertainment- kind of mental aspects.

Brief2# First Cut

This aim of project is looking for a observations in UK and working as a group. We need to practice our negotiate skill and team-working.
180 strand
Introduction-made by our team

I’ve get along with team member very well Via brief 2. We had more than 7 times team meeting to negotiate what the goal should we achieve. During the first meeting, we all confused without any valuable idea. Automatically, lots of idea comes up after re-reading the requirement and concept of brief. We decided purposing a even like an exhibition in london per person then vote for one option. After simple team presentation, we all choose the 180 strand exhibition which was from Lorana.

Negotiating
Team meeting

I’m not a people person. It is a little bit difficult to express my opinion and feeling for me in case we have different ideas create divisions. However, we get along with each other very well. We are all from different countries with diversity culture, definitely, the thinking way could not be similar with. But it is also a good situation, it provides more information and probability except easily manage these information.

From other sides, our relationship becomes closer by negotiating. I’ve almost conquered my inner fear of communication via this project. Moreover, my girlfriend give many help on video making due to we are not familiar with Perimeter application. The most problem for us is introduction. I think that we should use and quote official introduction on website with reference but the others believe that this behavior is stealing and unacceptable. I text and also call to convince them. But they insisted their opinions so i compromised with this decision. But i feel fine with it cause i have expressed my opinion and would not feel regret with this situation. We all work hard for the same aim and want make it better. Finally, we have a unique experience and get a satisfied result at the end.
